This short sword has an overall shape representative of the mid Nanbokucho period, and features a wide yet extremely thin blade, longer than typically seen in swords of this type. The hitatsura (full-surface-tempered) blade features a hamon pattern that combines a yahazu (“arrow notch”) style midare (irregular) pattern and a notare (wavy) pattern. This piece was presented to the Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi as an offering from the Owari-Tokugawa family during the Choshu Expedition.
