Kuroda Tatsuaki, regarded during his life as a living national treasure, was a lacquer artist and wood worker whose style is representative of Japanese craftworks in the 20th Century. He was born into a family of lacquer-ware artisans. In his twenties, he participated in and left an impression on the MINGEI (folk craft) revival movement. His style is mainly known for its sense of solidity and depth, with beautifully textured materials such as wood, lacquer, and mother-of-pearl.
